Over a month ago I posted a model call. I had only planned on selecting two ladies. I had so many great responses with great stories but there was one that I knew instantly was one that I just had to do. My original model call was for ladies who were in the age range of 40 to 55. So Carla first messaged me saying that she didn't quite fit the age requirement but after reading her story I knew that didn't matter. I wanted to do this shoot for her.
She wrote that this past March that she had been diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. She told me today that is was an aggressive form. She explained in the email that she would be having a double mastectomy coming up. This is actually happening next week!
She really wanted to have these portraits to have her body as it is now documented before the surgery. Her body will never again look as it does right now and she wanted to celebrate that.
My grandmother died when I was two from breast cancer. I was so young that I have no memories of her. She died before my middle sister and younger sister were born. We did not have the pleasure of being raised knowing her. The way my mom describes her I know she would have had a positive impact on our lives. Breast cancer has a way of touching most people's lives in some way.
Carla is such a positive and brave person. She is so strong. She has completed 16 rounds of chemo and will have a surgery that will greatly affect her in more ways than one. She is facing this with the heart of a fighter. Spending the few hours I did with her today was humbling and inspiring. Her personality and her heart was one of the sweetest that I have met. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to meet her and provide this service for her. She is amazing.
So in honor or breast cancer awareness month I am thankful to share Carla's journey and her gorgeous portraits.
I want to do a shout out to Morgan at the Brow Bar, she recently gifted Carla a microblading session to help her have a small sense of normalcy. Those brows were on point! Check out her on FACEBOOK.
